Good product poorly marketedDec 23, 2010

The product description on Amazon is weak so I went to the Carlson website for more info and their product description clearly said, at the time I was reading it, that this gate fit a 37" to 60" opening, which was ideal for me. When the product arrived I quickly discovered, as have others who reviewed this product, that that is wrong and there was no way for me to use this product. So I called Carlson and immediately got a real person (not a phone tree) who offered to help me, which she did (without shuttling me off to someone else). She apologized because their marketing materials were wrong and that they now recommend this product for openings 60" or greater. Sad that they haven't corrected this yet as from the other reviews it is clear this has been misleading for months. In any event, she offered me a replacement product (Extra-Tall Walk-Thru gate) with proper extensions to fit my opening. It arrived two days later. So, in my book, outstanding customer service.
As to the product itself, some of the following applies to one or the other product or both. I find the gates, made from metal, to be sturdy, unlike some wooden gates I have used. As others mention, the gate opening is narrow (16") and I have to turn a bit sideways to get through. The gate latch must be manually operated to both open and close; the latter is annoying as you can't just give the gate a shove and have it latch. The latch design also restricts the door to open in one direction only. I think it should be possible to design it to auto-latch in both directions. The cat door is useless to me so I wished they offered a door without it as it would probably be cheaper. The Extra-Tall Walk-Thru gate is pressure mounted but can be anchored with screw-in wall cups. If you choose to use the wall cups I suggest you try it with the simple pressure mount first. This will give you a chance to use the door and make sure it works best for you. It makes it easy to know where to put the cups later if you choose to do so.
I give the product itself 4 stars for the reasons above. I would give 5+ stars for customer service and 1 star for marketing for not clearly describing the product and worse yet, continuing to not correct the information many months later.

Effective, but may take some adjustingAug 05, 2010

I have three LARGE dogs...all over 60 pounds and this gate is sturdy and tall enough to keep them out of the areas that I do not want them in. Being large dogs, and pretty young, we wanted this to serve more as a visual barrier -- they have jumped on it a few times, but the gate holds up to it. The gate is very tall! I have a very agile and athletic poodle and even she would have trouble clearing this gate.
As another review pointed out, be sure to measure your area before ordering. There are three adjustable settings. They worked for us -- but we had an odd shaped opening (it was not a traditional door way but an opening between two rooms where the walls are not parallel to each other-- so had to get a little creative on how to mount it to walls -- we mounted the gate to hinges and attached the hinges to the wall). However, even with our unique situation, the installation did not take more than 30 minutes and was super easy.
My only negative is that the gate opening is a little narrow.
But other than that, its a great product!

Very Poor Quality, Extremely DisappointingNov 28, 2011
By SNMommy I was looking for a gate to keep my dog out of the kitchen and dining room but allow the cats in so they could get to their food. This product (like all Carlson products) was poorly packaged and arrived damaged (bent rails, scratched paint, rust). When you use this product set to the 60" width, there is a humungous gap between the extension and the gate. It is large enough that my toddler and my dog could each get through it which defeats the point.
Also, the cat door is MUCH too large. My 70-pound Coonhound can fit through it which further defeats the point of ever getting this gate.
The width of the opening in the gate is incredibly narrow. If you are overweight, you will never fit through it without turning sideways. Also, even if you are thin, it is damn near impossible to get through it carrying a baby.
My original plan was to take a wooden baby gate, permanently set the size and use hinges and latches to secure it a couple of inches off the floor. The Carlson gate seemed way easier (I have three children, one is medically fragile) but all in all, it was a complete waste of time, effort and money. I am waiting for UPS to come pick it up now.

Doesn't fit my door frame!Dec 16, 2009
By K. Sama I just received my pet gate and was disappointed to find it did not fit my door frame, even though it is within the dimensions listed for the product. I needed a product to cover 45 inches, but the main gait with the added 5 inches per side extenders only goes to 43 inches. It comes with an extension panel, but this only works above 51 inches. So if you need anything between 43 and 51 inches, you're screwed. I wrote an email to the company to see if they offer a solution. K

I was extremely disappointed in the quality of this gate. I may be able to make it work, but for the most part I think it was a waste of money.
