4wish the rats liked it betterMay 15, 2007
By rat_taxi
I think this is a really healthy food for rats, it smells very fresh and is
attractively packaged, and the only thing I find wrong with it is that my
rats don't particularly like it. They will eat it quite well for a few days,
but after that they kind of politely ignore it until there's nothing else in
their bowls. Then they hide it behind their boxes or stack it in the corner
as if by emptying their bowls they can cause new and DIFFERENT food to
appear. Aside from that it really is the best rat food that I've found.

5Best food for Rats!!Oct 20, 2010
By Sumerian Sage
After much research, I decided Oxbow Regal Rat was the best food for the nutrition content my ratties need. Corn (which is not good for ratties) is not in the main ingredients! I find that this food brings out the best in my ratties: shiny fur, radiant personalities, and great health overall.

The best thing after opening the bag is that it's RESEALABLE!

Also, I heard that this may not be the most palatable food for rats, so I contacted the company. They said that most rats take a while to get used to it because they're transitioned from another food, but if ratties are started on it there's no issue. The recommendation is to feed Oxbow Regal Rat to ratties 4 months and older, so before that, just use another pellet to provide the growth nutrients. For my young rats, I supplement with Native Earth 18% (used to be Harlan Teklad) for the extra protein, then wean them off so the Regal Rat is all they get (with treats like fresh and prepared people foods, of course!).

As for taste, the company said they're working on a different flavor combination. I vote banana! Not all ratties enjoy the apple flavoring that this food has, but I've never seen a rat turn down banana! Or yogurt, for that matter. Anyway, if your ratties are having trouble liking the taste, just add a drizzle of yogurt or fruit and veggie puree and mix well so it soaks in. Then gradually reduce it until they're eating the pellets (or, keep doing it because they love, love, love it!). Just make sure the moist bits don't sit for longer than a day or two because the freshness wears off (in more ways than one).

4Speaking for the rats....Aug 28, 2011
By Martin Selbrede
Gus said, "I generally grab the Oxbow and hoard it, along with the Mazuri cubes. I prefer to eat fresh food. But it's nice to have something to fall back on .... Assuming Laslo doesn't plunder my stash, the twit."

Laslo said, "My pen mate doth protest too much. He wasn't gonna eat that other stuff anyway, and if he wanted to protect his hoard, he should hide it better. And don't listen to anything he said about the vet weighing him 80 grams lighter after a couple of months. It had NOTHING to do with my, uh, borrowing his Oxbow pellets."

Fawn said: "My owner drops the Oxbows all over the cage for me to 'hunt and gather,' so I do. When push comes to shove, I eat 'em -- especially when my owner cuts off the food supply to get me hungry enough to eat yogurt stuffed with yucky-tasting medicine. Don't need meds, don't want meds. I hate the vet. But Oxbow is okay. They say it has all my nutritional needs met. Hmmph. I still prefer cooked salmon and yam balls sweetened with brown sugar. Yum. Hey, was there medicine in that yam ball?"

Ears said: "First, I want to object to my owner changing my name from Dot to Ears, just because I'm the so-called 'Dumbo' breed of fancy rat. Nuff said. Oxbow's good stuff. I'll eat it as a snack, but since I know my owner is cooking up some REAL food, it's never my first choice. I'm SO glad she doesn't take the writing on the box seriously that says something like 'Complete nutrition source for your rat -- you need not feed anything else.' Now THAT is a dangerous piece of advertising."

Flo said, "Our owner didn't rename me, 'Ears'. Ha! I was Flo, and I'm still Flo. And I like Oxbow. But like Ears said, it's kinda my backup food when I'm hungry and need to hit my stash of hoarded pellets. Some Mazuri, some Oxbow. Oxbow's kinda nice because they're sorta heart-shaped, while Mazuri is like a block of ... well ... Mazuri-stuff, I guess. My owner gets upset if I accidentally bite her taking an Oxbow out of her hands, cuz they're smallish compared to Mazuri cubes. But by mealtime, I'm hungry, so all civility goes out the window. I'm a rat, hear me roar!"

Xena said, "Flo, Dot, and I came in to our owner's possession in the same cage -- we were rescued from Austin's animal shelter from certain death. And my name stayed the same -- until the vet techs decided to nickname me "Xena the Warrior Rat," after some TV show. It's got a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Oh, yes, the Oxbow. Oxbow okay. I eat it when I'm done with everything else. It's on the same level as, uh, day-old lettuce. If I have a choice, I'll eat the Oxbow instead of the wilted lettuce (which is usually on the verge of being thrown out of the cage anyway by my fastidious owner). Oxbow keeps longer than lettuce -- but I'm not sure that's a total plus. They say Twinkies last for centuries. Hmm... "

Oliver is out being fostered by a friend, but we (the owners) left the foster parent with plenty of Oxbow and Mazuri. Our two late rats, who passed away this year (Showboat and Snowplow) also liked Oxbow. We have three rats that we captured from Garrison Park in Austin and are using Oxbow to help socialize them and get used to eating out of our hands (without actually EATING our hands). We've named them Striipe, Spott, and Starr (named after distinguishing features on their fur pattern). Once they learn English, they'll post their own reviews of Oxbow. Should be interesting to hear.

Keeping in mind how PICKY rats are (they're totally snooty aficionados), you might not get immediately buy-in with Oxbow, but once they get the hang of this full-nutrition food, they ... uh ... hoard it, pretty much. Unless they're REALLY hungry and can't wait for fresh food. Then all bets are off.

3healthy but not palatableJul 21, 2009

My rats will not eat this food, although the ingredient list is pretty good. Two thing to note: it includes fish meal and soybean meal (Soybean meal not contains phytoestrogens)and it's an "open" formula - meaning as long as there is still more A than B ingredient, the relative quantities can shift with market conditions.

5Very nutritional and now TASTY, with new Formula :)Oct 26, 2011

***NEW Review 11/1/2011***

They are now shipping the "New and Improved" Formula and Flavor, at least that's what I got. I've posted pictures of the new Package, Ingredients, and what the pellets look like. I am pleased to say that my Rats love it. It's slightly smaller than the Older Formula, which I like. It's very easy for them to hold while they eat. I hope that this continues to be sold on Amazon for as long as they make it because my local pet stores only offer a generalized pellet that's for Mice/Rats/Hamsters, which just won't cut it in my book. There are also times when my local Vet doesn't have this. I am much more inclined to buy it on Amazon rather than go to the vet every time my rats need more.

***Edit 10/28/2011***

It appears that they have had the new Formula and Flavor for months now. I just wish that there was clarification on Amazon that this is now the new flavor. Anyway I've purchased more and hope that it is the new flavor. If not then I know my local exotic vet carries this stuff as well.

***Original Review***

I bought this 6 months ago. I used it all and it really helped my rats. They were more energetic and had a beautiful and soft coat. I really wish my rats would eat more of this though, I can never get them to. It's one of the best rat foods on the market, but they just don't like the flavor. I have heard that they are making another flavor available soon. I hope it will be available through Amazon. If anyone knows when it's available please let me know. The things I do like about this food is that it's small and easy for my rats to hold when they eat it, yet big enough that they don't need to keep getting more and more just to satisfy their hunger. It's nutritional value is wonderful as well! It's the only thing my exotic pet vet recommends. Hopefully the new flavor will do the trick for my rats.
